Japanese Medal - What Is It?

A friend picked up this medal at an estate sale. I know little to nothing about Japanese medals, so I was wondering if someone could tell me the name of this one and whether it's a 'common' one or not? No ribbon came with the medal.

This is a China Incident War Medal in first issued in 1939 and its very common especially without the ribbon.
