Help with Unknown Netherlands Dutch Medal

    Hi Everyone,

I got this medal yesterday and believe it's from the Netherlands.

Can anyone identify it for me and possibly translate the writing?

    Thanks,
    Keith

      That is correct.

      The translation:

Centre: To J. Bergs for special dedication

Round: Dutch Union of Volunteer Guards

The medal was instituted in 1924 to decorate Volunteer Guards for merit. Volunteer Guards no longer exist. They were part of the pre war Defense system as a sort of local defense force in case of an enemy invasion. You could compare it with the Home Guard of the UK in WWII. Nice medal.
