    FAC Patches

Per dasc 603 request, I would like to start this thread of FAC’s that supported the ground units in the war. These individuals were God sent and many owe their lives for their brave actions.

My camera is not working at this time, but here are 5 patches that I found after my sojourn to SOS. Please add to this thread to honor those who flew for us.

As a grunt on the ground one of the greatest sights that the eye and ear could behold was that little birddog flying overhead which was directing air assets on the enemy below. Be it a helicopter gun ship, A-1’s, Canberra bombers, or AF jet fighters they were always an awesome sight to behold. We were able to control and direct the smaller aircraft, but the jet fighters were in control of the FAC’s.

I had the opportunity to fly back seat on an Army L-19 on many occasions and on one mission
got shot down because we thought that we were the attack aircraft, and not the FAC. After
getting patched up I immediately went up again with an Air Force FAC that understood his job better than us Army jocks. We located the area were we had attacked earlier and still saw the
sand pans hiding under the trees. The FAC then made a pass, fired his rocket above 2000 feet and within a minute the attack jets which were circling above made their passes and dropped their ordinance. A first hand experience that is more impressive and exciting than what you see in the movies.

Was this a lesson learned for us? Nope, for the next time we went up we repeated ourselves,…… we were just young, dumb and stupid.

Four of Four. This grouping is named to Cpt. Tom Tolle 1970-1971 COVY 352. All are Thai. made.

Nice pieces. Looks like they came out of John Cook's collection.

Thanks Bob, it is one of the few groupings that I own. I will check with Larry.

About a year and a half ago Larry had these for sale individually and I thought they were all sold. They were not, he returned them and were recently listed by Bill where I found them prospecting the web.

Owen with that uniform you just found, ........the PATCH GOD is looking out for YOU...... and ME.

Thanks for posting the backs of these-- nice to see that. These appear to be something that "look better in person" than with scans/digital photos, I'm sure the scans don't do these patches justice.

Quite interesting the price defference between Larry & Bill!!

                  Thanks for posting thse.

Thanks for posting the photos. Whenever I see a warbird Oscar Deuce I still get tears in my eyes...

No pictures but a friend of mine (Sundog 05) flew the O-2 from January to November 1972 with the 21st TASS. He didn't share a lot of stories but did talk quite a bit about An Loc. He's got my greatest respect as a pilot!

                        Andy,

When they were first listed the market was still strong in comparison to the present day. To many factors to consider........but all I can say is...... that I was fortunate!

Hunter, outstanding patches, especially the Paddy Rats and 21st Division patch.

PatricK and Guy, here is a patch that I just picked up from a mate in England.

This is a patch for the 21st Division FAC's, which I have not seen before.

One thing that I have discovered is that there were some beautiful patches
                              made in IV Corps.
