ARVN QC Day

Last Saturday was ARVN QC Day....or at least it was for me anyway.
Two new acquisitions, which are appropriate for this thead: One QC Helmet (From Some Guy We All Know) and a QC 45 Manual with real photos as illustrations (From Some Other Guy We All Know).

Here are a few photos below. My apologies for the low light, it is almost 1AM afterall...and as with most military collectors, my consititution causes me to avoid bright lights.

Interesting manual. Looking at it i wonder if it was a draft for something that was later mass published. Seems a bit expensive and labor intensive to make these even just for a training cadre.

This was my first thought as well. I wondered if it may have been a manuscript or something, which was later widely published as a manual. However, after talking with other collectors (including the source of the acquisition) , as well as one ARVN veteran this week (though not of the QC branch), I have learned that such formatting for instructor manuals was common. At the training centers, master manuals - often with type-writer typed text and real photos pasted inside, were common for usage by instructors. Individual trainees often didn't receive some of the more specific manuals, like this one only covering the usage of a .45, and instructors would merely use them for reference before conducting training. They were expected to just remember everything, or only refer to it if they needed to recall a specific point.
Also, as one general impression from my own limited experience; the publishing field of the ARVN was not as standardized, nor undertaken in as large quanities as other armies. Troops, such as regular ARVN infantry enlistedmen, often were not issued individual manuals of any kind.

Very similar procedures in the US military.

Manuals were rarely handed out to individuals.

Training on most simple equipment was hands on under strict supervision.


We had to make up training lessons and plans and often used manuals as reference.

We called them lesson plans and were expected to follow them implicitly.

When it got to the indigenous guys, that tended to vary.

The more technical a subject was, the more reading material one might recieve.

Teaching thru an interpreter was exasperating as well as entertaining.

Especially when all your troops could not even speak to each other.
