Press Photos in my collection

I have been bidding on similar photos on eBay and I wonder if we have been bidding against each other.
A lot of these come out of old newspaper archives that are either being digitized or cleared out so more recent items can be added.
Many of these got to the newspaper through the "wire photo" services of AP and UPI, as well as DoD photos. This was an early version of a Fax machine and the process has been in use since WWII.
If you bid on these at auction (not that I want your competition on them) take a very close look at them first. The quality of the wire photos vary greatly, from very close to a direct photo all the way down to blurry and poorly defined.
The larger news organizations seemed to have better reception equipment. I obtained some that had been from a major paper in Detroit and they are fairly sharp.
Not to pick on anyone, but there is a vendor on eBay that goes by the name of oldmexicanlobbycards. And yes he is located in Mexico. He sells the exact same AP and UPI wire photos, but you can tell what ever news organization he obtained them from had very poor equipment. I learned this the hard way. I can't blame him, he sent me exactly what I had bid on, but I did not take time to really look hard at the photos in the auction listing.
Thanks for sharing these... these are some of the ones I missed.
Oh, and by the way, in case anyone is considering publishing these... the copyrights are still valid. Expect to pay the photographer or his news organization $200 to $800 befor putting them in a book!

Hi Gil, I haven't bid on any press photos in eBay. I aquired about 7,000 from a guy that rescued them from The Cleveland Plain Dealer. I sold 4,000 to a guy in NY. I did sell some on eBay a few years ago. I have kept about 1,000 for my own collection. They range from WW2 to Vietnam. Thanks for your information. BTW, are you going to the SOS? If so, I'll be set up with John O'Connor & Dave Mizen. CHUCK

SOS is outside of the travel budget right now. I haven't seen John in years and I think I've met Dave. One of these years I'll get back...
I am stunned to see how many of these come onto the market all at once. They just come in a large lot, like yours, when a newspaper decides to clear their archives. All of the papers received the same photos... so sometimes if you miss in one auction it is just a matter of waiting for th next one.

Very interesting photos and for starting the thread to show us...please post more if you have any...Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don't dare express themselves as we did. Quote - Sophie Scholl - White Rose resistance group
