Patrick, all the pics are cool but I think they are all backwards, the berets on the USSF should be draped the other way. That also might explain why patches seem be on the left and right. The first pic of the advisor was the giveaway for me.

That's an interesting point, but wonder if it's actually them wearing it in the same manner as the vietnamese troops which is often the beret with badge worn on the opposite or right side of the beret, if you look in some of the photos my dad took on around page 5 of this thread, some of the vn guys wear it on the right and some on the left.

Looking at Patrick's Khmer pics, interestingly it looks like the Cambodians where the beret in american fashion, peak/badge on left side, while the US advisor most def wearing it in the VN fashion, badge crown on the right.

Alex, I'm assuming Don Tan My was in Duc Hue but can't be sure it's what one of the advisor assn members told me.

Continues to be a great thread!

            HI Alex,
I'm afraid I just don't know but judging by the way it's set up, think it must be something for the govt. I so wish I'd have sat down with my father when I had the chance to go thru all these slides and tell me who/what are in them!

If you'd like to pm me your email addy, I can send you more pics from I believe different buildings in the area.

The photos are flipped. This is clearest in #201 where the beret insignia has the red canton with temple in the upper right. It was always in the upper left. As mentioned before, the USSF trooper is showing his shoulder patch on the right shoulder and it should be on the left. Ditto on #206. Finally, all the uniform tops button in the wrong direction. Either that, or everyone is wearing woman's clothing.

Hi all some of the slides are indeed a mirror image.

                  Here is another clear example.

This airborne officer has his patch and wings reversed also.

Still like the shots all the same though.

                  More to follow later.

                  Patrick.

                      Hi Alex,

                      the picture dates to 1973.

French camo was generally the preserve of airborne troops.

It can be seen worn until the final collapse in 1975.

                        Hi Alex,

there are images of FANK beret insignia in post #133, you will encounter variations showing rank, and in the case of USSF you will see the standard crossed arrow DI too.

Here's text from the same book explaining the role of NZ in training the Cambodians.

                        Great snippet of information Chris!
Perhaps one of these jackets still survive today...as i understand it Australian Veterans returned home to a less than rapturous reception also.

Here is another image for you. This time of a MRRP team. Kneeling at the front is their 1st SF Group Advisor.

Here is a shot of a platoon with their newly issued M16's.

Hard to make out, but the camo headgear which includes tigerstripe marks them out as a Recon platoon.

As mentioned previously, the Cambodians went out onto operations to engage NVA/VC as part of their training.

Some of these slides are of lower quality, but i include them as they are interesting.

First the .30 Cal gunners form up.

                                Very poor quality...Their US advisor.

If the picture is lightened considerably, you can just make out the modification of pockets added to his sleeves.

                                Note his chest rig too.
