          Hello Mudo,

          happy to help.

Thanks for posting the images of the dolls, the small details like the beret badges and the jump wings are quite fascinating to see.

The period photos you have posted are quite wonderful too, please post more when you find the time.

          Patrick.

                Assistance requested

Can anyone provide more details, or better yet post images, of the following ARVN insignia?

This is the pocket patch of the 18 Cavalry; can anyone tell me the colours
used and what the motto below the black horse is?

This rough sketch is based upon a colour photo; its elements seem to be a
soldier holding an M16 aloft, a half wreath and a couple of lines of text.
Does anyone have a clear photo of this badge?

An unidentified patch; does anyone know attribution and colours used?
                and finally...

Cecil Smyth, in his excellent ARVN insignia booklet, lists three variants of
the triangular 51 Infantry badge with yellow, orange or purple replacing
the red portion of the design. I've seen quite a few of the red/blue patches
but I've never seen any of the other colours. Does anyone have examples?

                Cheers

                RW

                  Unknown patch

This is the best photo I have of the second patch I mentioned, anyone recognise it?

                    Partick,

Sorry for the long due reply........

This is the only photo I kept of the doll.

                    The details are wonderful.

There is no doubt that the first dolls designed were made for the french airborne units and sold in the french PXs.

This one must have been adapted then?

                        Richard,

This is the the patch you talk about, but the two photos I have are really so so...

The photos were taken during a gathering at the Presidential Palace, late war. It seems to be during an award ceremony for the best soldiers of the different units. The soldier wearing that patch is form a regional unit.

                        I hope it helps ...

                          It does help...

I figured that the patch was probably some kind of award rather than a unit patch per se.
Is there any other insignia visible on your photos that would help identify the unit?

                          Cheers

I think I can make out a 2nd Military Region patch...

                              Hello Richard,

i have found a few images of this patch in wear in my archives.

NTS is entirely correct in that it comes from a presentation ceremony during the 1973 armed forces day.

I have made a few screen grabs of the film and will post more from it later in the week showing the patch in wear, in colour.
In the stills the patch can be seen in wear by more than regional units and worn by regulars of many branches.

                                Thanks Patrick and NTS
I look forward to the pictures. Maybe together we can work out what the badge actually is.
