WW1 Helmet - decorated after the war?

Hello all,

I have just purchased this helmet and would love some opinions? I believe it's a WW1 helmet which was painted after the war, perhaps in memory of an Iron Cross award?

I can't seem to get the individual photos to show up so here's an album link until I sort it!

I believe these were made by locals for soldiers to take home as souvenirs after WW1 . Rob

I'd normally never clean an old piece like this but what about oiling it to stop rusting? Or will it be fine in my home environment?

On the back below the IC, it appears like it has the letters I J , could those letters be the artists mark? (Separated by a red spot)

The white section likely covered the top at one time, now worn off. Very nice work , and score.

Don't clean it , it has survived this far without cleaning . Oil might react with the paint and it will make it less valuable . Rob

That's for sure a cool looking helmet. It looks great as is and I wouldn't clean it.
