    WW1 German gas mask?

I came across this gas mask on the internet.....Have to admit I don't recall seeing another one similar....The face piece looks like a WW1 German/Austrian "gummimaske" but has what appears to be a snorkel mouth piece, like the US type.....The filter also has what appears to have once had a exhale valve attached.....Is this a rare variation or is it one I just haven't seen yet?.....Any thoughts appreciated as usual.....Bodes

It's style is quite similar to the German and Austrian masks of the day....Only differences are the ones I pointed out and lack of comparable markings.....I suppose another European country is possible, as I suspect they stole ideas from one another.....Bodes

I'm pretty sure it's the "U.S. Navy Mask" seen worn top left.

Hans, Could very well be....I guess I didn't realize we used the numeral system for mask sizes like the Europeans did....My only concern with your analysis is, I'm not sure the US used string to attach the lenses (as per German/Austrian) to the face piece......I'm just speculating, as I really don't know.....Bodes

I have no idea how U.S. eyepieces were attached, but this looks like an S.B.R. with a filter plate. There appears to be remnants of a hose attached to both the mask and filter. Neither the mask nor the filter are German - of that I'm certain. I would post this in the U.S. forum.

              *S.B.R. = small box respirator

Look up "U.S. Navy Mk I Gas Mask (Mouth Canister Type)". Apparently also designated "Mk I Mouth Canister" and "Navy Snout Type Mask".

Hans, you're right on....I can see the exhale valve in two of the photos.....Here's a photo which shows it a little more clearer.....Thanks, Bodes
