    identifying unit on helmet?

I read/learn a lot but don't post often, but have a question for those more knowledgeable than me. I have an M-17 helmet that I've had since I was a kid many years ago, with an interesting marking I've always wondered about. in the inside skirt at the rear where you typically see a name, its instead marked "2 MGK 1334". my assumption is this means 2nd Machine Gun Company, but would the 1334 refer to a regiment? is this something that is traceable? I've always wondered but thought I would finally ask. would post a pic but I don't have those privileges (and would welcome help in getting them -- i've written to mods but have not heard back). thx john p

    John,

It sounds like a serial number, that is, the soldier's muster roll number in the unit.

Or simply a inventory or rack number for the helmet. On weapons it would be a weapon number for example 30.R.2.M.G.K.25 the 25 would be the Waffe Nr.25.
