I'm thinking that it once was a M17 camo... now stripped and cleaned with a M16 liner added.

last pic. I don't have a problem with the dark green paint on your helmet... I've seen it many times on camo helmets. The fact that your helmet has been cleaned or whatever has removed what it truly once was. Hope this helps Tom.

              Hi Chuck
I don't see that, no marks where the steel may have been removed anyway I love that interior colour grey for me shows its an earlier helmet later stamped 66.

Nice lid btw stop showing off!

                Hello Eric,

The shell has been so deeply cleaned that you really cannot tell one way or the other... leather band or steel. Well, at least I can't. Because of this, and the re bent liner pins, ink stamped size 66, and numbers inside dome area make me think M17. Other than being cleaned the interior paint is fine and would be appropriate for an early issue M16 or rebuilt M17.

Of course the M16 liner system could be original to this shell, and was removed and reinstalled when the helmet was cleaned. You guys already know how I feel about this.

                Chuck

It's either as someone said the result of metal heating done in the press or a primer they used.
