1915 "Pewter" Saxon Buckle, 182 Regiment Marked, GH Osang 1915

Here's a hard-to-find wartime buckle I just picked up recently from an old collection in Minnesota. It's a 1915 "Pewter" Saxon Buckle, 182 Reg't, GH Osang 1915 marked.

The buckle is not really "pewter", but it's made of a non-ferrous material that did not work out very well for the production of buckles. This buckle frame and the disk are both non-magnetic. The catches on this type of buckle proved to be too weak and often broke or pulled out because of the non-ferrous metal used. The gray color is the natural color of the metal, and in some ways it feels similar to real pewter.

This example must have seen a little use, as there's a couple of dings in the center disk.

I've been looking for one of these examples for a very long time. I'm thrilled with the unit marking, and the nice maker mark clearly visible.

I look forward to your comments. Thanks everyone!

    All the Best,

    Alan

          Alan,

I think it is actually a zinc alloy and as you say, they discontinued them, as the keeper would rip the catch right out of the back of the buckle. The metal tended to crack at stress points.

I have the brother M95 version to the same regiment.
