I have got it for a couple of hundred, it has intrigued me, I have it in hand and looks and feels like a private purchase, no other marks but IMHO not standard, almost a parade piece or maybe a shop window piece???......many thanks for your comments.......will keep it in the collection

Were there ever private purchase WWI steel helmets for sale?

I would guess for the M.18 style yes and certainly in the 1930's .....very similar Helmet is in the book "SS Steel" which also confirms eight commercial companies producing helmets.......

the size is definitely non-standard so a private purchase is very likely. a couple of hundred is the right price, congrats

can you take some comparison pics of this 70 and a size 66/68 you may have, side by side? would be interesting to see...

Chuck, I found where the liner pads came from at least. I knew I had seen one before.

It looks like a repainted and aged one of these to me:

None that I've ever heard of, or seen.

Unlike with the British and French during WW1, there was no such thing as an officer grade or private purchase combat helmet in the German Army, and that goes for liners and chinstraps as well.

Yep. That helmet I posted was M16 Version but I bet the same repro maker.

Good spot Eric! That edge is not correctly rolled and the metal is softer. It's steel laking the nickel.
