    M17 Liner pads?

    Guys,

A new member asked me to look at his liner in this helmet. They look repro and very well done aging with some sort of grease job but it might also be a case of exceptional original condition. My gut says no. What do you think? Here is outside and inside.

I'm with you William. These type of pads have been discussed, and the concensus was a I don't like the cut/shape of the pads, the stitching, drawstring holes, and the blackened backsides. I can see at least one of the liner pins has been bent. I wouldn't be surprised if the liner band was removed to sew on these pads. They're are a few that may not have a problem with these, but they're not for me.

The draw string is repop ID disc cord. Pads are beautifully made but are reproduction also imho.

They look like my repro pads from Steffan's shop out of Nebraska. They just have that repro fluffy look you don't want to see.

Chuck I saw your M-18 on ebay. I thought it was a keeper for you?

I ended up with three of these beauties. I sent one overseas last year... It went for $2200.00. I'm pretty much testing the market. I have no problem keeping it on the top shelf with the other if it doesn't sell. I'm actually going after a few leather helmets this year.

Rememebr those two refurbished helmets, one M18 and one Austiran I've been trying to sell? I finally sold them but for a big loss. I need money as it's time to buy new tires and I just got done forking over 1,500 for a timing chain repaire on my Nissan Xtera at ONLY 30,000 miles

This crap has really put a dent into collecting. I might have made you an offer on the M18 if not for my money troubles.

I would be interested to know/see how these liner pieces are attached to the helmet/band.

If the owner can send me close ups of the liner pins we can see what's been or have not been pulled. IF the liner's been pulled you can deduct that the pads were re crimped. IF the liner has not been pulled they are either stuffed in and will come out easy with a screw driver pressed in to release the pinch or they are glued in.

IF the liner's never been pulled and there is no glue and yet they are crimpted into place you might reasonably conclude they are original pads.

                        Eric,

I don't know about Chuck but as I mentioned before I am trying to survive in this bad economy and also getting ready for the Crash of the Dollar/economic collapse and the crackdowns that will result. Remember?

Not a hope. Sorry, still a nice lid though.

                            We are all hurting.
Maybe Chuck has been to Lourdes to take in the waters. Rich people do things like that you know.
                            Not for us scrubbers though.

Chuck's not rich or he'd not be selling to be buying as he does. I think he's got some glorious job with the Government in security with some weapons testing manufacturers or something. (Right Chuck? ) Good paying I am sure but he was a career man in the USMC (still assuming and we slinked out of our duties to chase skirts and drink boos.
Just as well. The former active duty Marine security guard at work asked me why I did not enlist with the Marines as we were talking about his time in when he almost went to Cuba for the Missle Crisis. I told him I could not have been a Marine I would have Dronwed. He said oh you learn to swim real fast when they push you into the pool with full pack and gear on. I said ya but sometimes they don't make it. And that would have been me since I can't swim very well at all.

Back to the topic take a look at the pads in my former Cut out Helmet. Seems to be the exact construction compared to the M17 in question. Notice the fluffy look.
