    German Aviator (Flieger) Crash Helmet

I thought I would post this here for you Imperial collectors to take a look at. What I have is a WWI German aviators crash helmet. I don't know if I have ever seen one of these posted on the forums before? I acquired this helmet several years ago knowing very little about German WWI aviation headgear. This particular helmet is painted green. I was told it was repainted after the war. Surviving crash helmets of this type were typically painted white by flying training schools after the war. This helmet does show traces of white paint underneath the green paint. The interior liner of the helmet looks similiar to that of a pickelhaube liner and is in good condition. There is a size "59" stamp and an oval makers stamp "Herfeld &..." on the interior dome of the helmet. On the interior side of the rear leather neck flap is a faint stamp that reads "Flg Bekl Doberitz 1918." Since very little is published about these helmets, I would like your opinions about this crash helmet and any additional information / photos you may have about German aviator crash helmets.

    Thanks for taking a look.

    Dan

That is very nice, but I would like to see a few more photos There is not much available on these helmets, but I can tell you that the white paint was removed as best as could be done by the previous owner, and it was repainted "fieldgrey" Photos of this helmet can be seen on pages 507 and 508 of Johan somer's book "Imperial German Field Uniforms and Equipment 1907-1918" vol. 2

Very interesting piece, Dan. I've always been interested in these, and have a picture of my uncle wearing one in 1917. I'll see if I can find it.

I have several pictures of german presonal with flying helmets. There are several models using during WW1. Most of them are painted black or in other dark color.

I have one in fieldgrey marked "Flg Bekl", "Döberitz", 1917.

                      Regards Alex

Thanks to those who have commented.

Alex, I would be interested in seeing your 1917 marked flight helmet.

Also, if anyone has period photos of these helmets being worn feel free to add to this thread.
