Hi
You have a French M1860 leather shako missing its helmet plate. The French made great use of these and were general issue to Infantry, Pioneers and other units, differing only in the design of the helmet plate and in some cases the height of the shako.
Many thousands of these were imported from France during our Civil War with an American eagle and Infantry horn emblem on the front and issued out to volunteer units in several states. They were pretty much a flop with the troops and mostly sat around in storage until sold to Francis Bannerman after the war.
This is an import model by the colors on the cockade, the French issue colors are reversed, looking from the center, blue-white-red.
I like these old shakos a lot, they look great with the big Imperial French eagles on them..
