Scott is very good at telling the repros to the real paint schemes on WWI helmets (US and German). I would highly doubt he would put a dubious one on his site if he was concerned. He's helped me with several rare aero squadron helmets in the past.

Scott from Bay state? On his site this right now is a BAD bad bad guards M16 helmet. So I would not be so confident to say he knows all he needs to know. His prices are way too high on cracked and holed helmets to boot.

But none of that is the reason for this post nor was I saying ANY of the examples arer bad. Just that with the recent influx they need to be viewed with suspision.

Much like with what we saw when mail home helmets started to pop up every week. I think I started to notice this influx after a really nice artsy helmet that did look ligit sold for big money.

A painted one by a known seller of fake painted helmets just sold for £1350 on UK ebay . The trouble is is unless you have followed that particular sellers offerings for the past 5 years you would not know .He has sold hundreds of so called Tommy art painted helmets from WW1 and German Trench art helmets and his artist gets better everytime . Caveat Emptor . Rob

            Robb,

Yep, many times you won't know unless you follow someone's work. We've followed Steel Helmets work on Camos and if not for that he'd fool some of us.

Do you have a photo of the one you are talking about?

It would be nice if the artists simply offered them for what they were at a decent price.

What is bad about the guard's helmet? Not being argumentative here, just really curious. American painted helmets are more in my realm, rather than German.

Is it the paint scheme? The overall drawing?

Nothing wrong with the hemet or the green paint it's the shield itself. The shield is so bad I did not even bother to post it for review here. What's bad about it? Look at the fake sand paper aging done on it. Excessive wear with a surrounding area with hardly any wear.

Is it possible it was a good shield and someone scuffed it up with sand paper? I suppose so. But it's more plausable that it was post war applied and an attempt was made to give it some age.

If it had a chance in hell I'd have posted it, got a good review and jumped on it as it's on my to get list.
