Regarding the boots, I would say that they look good in comparison to my pair. Mine are marked on the sole "XII 16" and "30 II". I believe the XII 16 means December 1916 (there are no letters - B.A.) and the 30 is the boot size. These marks would be obliterated as soon as the first set of hobnails wore out. Fortunately, my boots appear to only have been worn once for a stroll across the barnyard. They have a few bits of straw stuck to the heel, but no wear what-so-ever.

According to Kraus the woven boot pulls were used until 1916 when orders came out to replace them with scrap leather strips, due to the cloth shortage. Later, in 1918, the leather was ordered replaced by papercloth strips.

My only concern for your boots is the length of the shaft (measured from the top of the heel in the rear to the top of the shaft), which looks too short. Once again, I refer to Kraus, who says that the length should be 31-35cm. My pair measures 31cm exactly.

Thanks a lot Chip! I'll have to measure the shafts when I get them. I'll keep you updated.

I've found the following M1898 shovel and M09 carrier for sale somewhere.
What do you guys think about this set? The cover is marked AM 1 15, what does
      this mean exactly?

Thanks again guys, you are a hell of a support for me and I'm learning my WW1
stuff this way. I don't see another way how I should have started collecting
      without you guys!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! May you find a lot of good stuff this year!

        Floris,

The carrier is a good period piece and the marking is most likely "AWM", which stands for "Artilleriewerkstatt-München". The other mark, I believe is the Werkstatt number (1) and year of manufacture (1915).

The shovel is a generic Linnemann pattern that was used by most European armies. It could be German.

        Regards,
        Chip

Got myself my first stick grenade yesterday! The seller had a bunch of parts so
I bought the nicest head and wood and made it complete with screwing cap and
everything. It's a salty one but I like it a lot!

I did not think the shovel was German. NO idea about the carrier. It was on Ebay for 50 bucks. I suppose that was not bad for an austrian rig.

Got my boots in today and after some TLC they look like this.

The height of the shafts is exactly 31 cm so I'm good, right Chip?

Austrian made, IMO comes from the Bulgarian army.

                              Floris,

The boots cleaned up nicely and everything looks good. The shafts looked short in your original photo, but if they are 31cm you should be happy with them. It's not easy to find a pair of period boots in good condition or not reworked, so I think you are set. Congratulations!
