Question for the WW1 German Militaria Collectors

I'm able to buy this Göffel (Spork), perhaps a stupid question but as a WW1 newbie
I have to ask, it's original right? Would be cool to put in my Bing 17 mess kit!

I have never heard that before, and I don't think it is correct. Though the Brotbeutelband was used for various purposes, the original purpose of the Schlaufe was to harness the long handle of the shovel or axe when the backpack was not being worn. When the pack was worn, the handles were kept in place by a leather strap looped through the side of the backpack. So, when the backpack was put aside, there was still a need to keep the handles from flailing about.

Yes, this is most likely a WWI era Eßbesteck. I'm not sure when they started to make them out of aluminum for the army, but I know it was after the war. Aluminum was considered one of the special metals that was only used for specific purposes once the war started. Everything that had been made from aluminum was switched to steel or some other more readily available metal.

I didn't know all this Chip, I always thought the breadbag strap was used to
carry the breadbag or to support the belt while connected to the ammo pouches
around the neck.

Do you perhaps have any pictures which show all the different uses of this strap?

As Eric points out, the Schlaufe were often added on to the earlier straps that had never had one. That's why you often see the red/brown examples with the Schlaufe of a different color shade than the rest of the strap. So, yes, you are correct in saying that this strap we are looking at had the Schlaufe added during the war.

Here is some of my gear I've picked up over the last 4yrs only, non from a dealer its out there just need patience whats the rush anyway? Apart from the zink lined boiler which are quite tough I'm particularly proud of the simple tin cup came from an old Canadian dear whose family member brought it back from a Ypres salient bunker, I've the letter somewhere she sent me a month after I bought it, nice surprise. The watch runs but one of the hands fell off LOL!

Very nice stuff Eric, I especially like the breadbag and strap!
I guess it's easier to find WW1 items over here in Europe, when I
compare prices with overseas dealers, they often ask double or triple
the value!

What do you guys think about this belt and buckle? IMO a nice original set!
