    Robb,

That is strange. I pulled my M15 off the shelf and it does have the squared off liner "tongues". And it has ten, while yours has eleven.

      Unusual liner tongues

I wondered about this as well when I bought this M 1867 example from Manions' some years ago.

The visor and chinscales were obviously (and rather crudely) redone at some point. I don't know enough about the plates to tell whether the one on there now is original or a replacement. However, I have no doubt that the body itself is original, and from what I can see, the peculiar and rather tattered liner is sewn to the body, with no sign of any rework having been performed.

At the time, the late Eric Johansson was still handling customer inquiries regarding imperial militaria. When I asked him about the signs of rework and the unusual features of this Tschapka, he assured me that they were nothing to be alarmed about, that the frugal Prussians were known to repair and recycle their obsolete uniform items and issuing them to new recruits, to be worn during training. It sounded like a plausible explanation to me at the time (which was long before I came across this board and learned that Dr. Johansson was not held to the highest of esteems in certain circles), so I didn't press him any further on this.

In spite of the flaws and question marks, I am still quite fond of this helmet. The odd liner (the exception that proves the rule? Bob's M15 is the only other Tschapka I've seen so far that doesn't have the fold-over square tongues) is one aspect of it; Johansson's story (whether true or a bit of creative fibbing) is the other part.

Thanks Gene and Chip ,it does appear to be the same and well worn and sits nicely in the Tschapka . It would appear not all Tschapkas had squared of liners . Its like discovering a new species . Rob

I have five 1915 Tsapkas, all the liners are ten squared fingers and all I have ever seen had squared fingers. All the earlier enlisted Tsapkas I have are squared.

Well I have found a thread about the same helmet on GHW

              http://www.walhalla.se/index.php?sho...=4480&hl=uhlan

Looks like the helmet has received a new liner .! Rob

The original liner and the changed one . Rob

Wow, you are right Rob. This appears to be the same helmet!

Why would anyone do a thing like this, within the last two years no less, after the images of the helmet had already been posted online? Who in their right mind would take out an original liner to put in an incorrect replacement? Even if the mortar board had been home-made, surely that was not a justification for making the liner match the mortar board?

As for my own Tshapka, given the numerous repair work that were obviously done to it, I wouldn't be too surprised if the liner turned out to be a replacement as well (I just haven't quite figured out how they did it). The main question for me has always been who did the work and when.

In the case of this M15 however, there is now zero doubt as to the 'when' part. 'Who did it?' becomes somewhat irrelevant. The question is entirely - Why?
