I recently picked up these two portrait photos. I'm wondering about any information on these. I believe they may be Imperial or interwar shots. The first one shows SMS Zeiten. I believe this was an Imperial torpedo ship. Am I right. It's dated 1920 on the rear.

Hi Steve,
i'm with Justin here.The second photo shows the talley of the German Light Kreuzer Karlsruhe.She was lost on 10-4- 40.
I am having no luck in my search for info on the SMS Zieten?
Here are day visitor badges from the Karlsruhe and the Emden,from the 30's.

1. The first photo is of a sailor wearing an Imperial tally, therefore that could have been worn up until 1920. It should not have been worn after Nov 1918 but probably was as indicated on your photo. In any case, an Imperial tally.
2. The second tally is not Kriegsmarine, it is a Reichsmarine tally dating from 1930-1933. Probably for this photo 1931-1932 based on certain aspects of the uniform. Please note no eagle over the cockade.Last edited by John R.; 10-12-2009, 09:40 AM.Comment

Zieten was in service from 1 August 1876 to 5 July 1919, a large torpedo boat. Disposed of in Dec 1919.

Thanks guys. I was wondering about the lack of an eagle on the cap for the second one. The Zeitan I figured was Imperial. Here is some more info, but in German.

I guess the Zeitan photo could have been taken pre 1918, but only sent or dated after that year.Comment
