    Once again, I must thank all contributers to this thread. Here are some closer pictures. Hope these are ok.Nothing on the strap is magnetic-in fact nothing on the helmet is.

                  Thanks for taking the time to post additional pics as requested.

                  Adler 1, thanks also for your expert opinion. I fully agree that the chinstrap is 100% correct... we'll probably find the fittings to be brass underneath the years of oxidation/tarnish. I learned something new in regards to the drawstring, and now believe it to be 100% correct for this helmet. I also saw this type of drawstring in an Ersatz helmet pictured in the reference book "The German Army in the First World War by Jurgen Kraus".

                  With everything else going for it the cockades are most likely original as you say, just another variation. If that's the case they must be pretty rare. I have seen original cockades tied to their original cards, and many many over the years on documented leather helmets. Never have I seen this variation until know. I understand... just because I have not seen this variation means they are reproductions.

                  This helmet would be an excellent addition to the WWI German headgear collector.
