    m17 paint advice

so took a chance and picked up an m17 bargain -- great named interior and beautiful liner but black spray-painted exterior. hoping there was some original paint underneath and pleasantly surprised to see that theres evidence that it is a camo! i traced the very obvious black seperation lines with chalk and it seems to be a summetrical pattern. any advice/suggestions on how best to remove the black over-spray and preserve what is beneath? anyone ever done this? it seems to have been done with a spray can. but the wear suggests it was many years ago. just have one chance to do this right!

PS its marked "G62" on the skirt and has a nice but tough to read inkstamp on one of the pads inside.

I'd ask this question in the Conservation/Safe keeping forum and or the regular helmet forum.

Seems to me I've seen this question answered with fingernail polish but get more advice before you do anything.
