    W.,

Can you take good clear photos in natural light of the front and backs of the rivets heads?

I took some just now with my girl camera. I can see if she will be good enough to post them for me when she get home around 9:30 PM.

The seller was easy to work with, and held up his end of the deal. I watch his auctions on E-bay all the time, and everything has always been described very accurately. All I have ever seen him sell was good quality, original helmet parts !

Hey Paul thanks for showing up! I too have bought pins before as well as helmets and other items and never doubted anything he's sold me. The pins I have now just look too good to be true and maybe it's a case that I got original pins that are really as good as they look. I don't know what tell tale signs to look for if any when it comes to pins. I know that some but not all reproductions are bigger then the originals but I have also seen some that are spot on save for condition and new paint.

Was hoping someone would know their stuff when it came to pins. They just really look so good they remind me of the condition of new made pins that have been in a helmet and pulled. I've seen plenty of repro pins un used even with rust on them from Shelf Storage for example.

W., I understand your concern. You don't want to get repos when you pay for originals. If these were WW2, I could give you a definitive answer now. I want to see what the experts here say as well. That way I can log it away in the cranium for future use. If they turn out to be repos, I have confidence that the seller will make it right. I'll be watching to see how this develops myself!

            Paul,

I have a seven day inspection period so no worries. What I am worried about doing is sending them back when they may well be good. Cause they are too good to pass up if they are original. This is the real reason for the thread. Photos coming soon.

I hate to judge items like this just from pictures, but I would say that the pins themselves look original to me, and it seems that they have seen honest use. As for the paint, it looks like it's close enough to be WW1 period, but in spots it has a strange flakey look to it, almost as if it's peeling off. You have the benefit of examining them first hand. What's your overall feeling?

Just that they looked to be in better condition then I have ever seen. So good as to look like my reproduction pins. But I don't know what to look for specifically.

Would be better to judge the pins with the helmet they were in but don't have that option.

                        W.,

Are the "TIPS" of all six prongs cut evenly/the same?

Hard to say since they are bent. Looking at them close with two it's easy to see the prongs are even. With the one with the more bent up prongs I can see that if they were new and straight they would be even as well.

                            W.,

What I meant to ask was...

I wasn't refering to the overall lenght of each prong. I was trying to determine if the "ends/tips" of each prong are "shaped" exactly the same way. For example, the ends/tips of each prong are not cut straight across... they are notched (or trimed) at the corners. What I noticed on these types of original rivets in my helmets is that they are all cut/shaped the same. I can't determine whether yours are or not in the photos, but, from what I can see they are not.

It's tough to explain, and I don't know if it means anything or not but it might. I will try to post a couple of close-up photos of what I am talking about. After I get your response I will sum up my thoughts and give you my final opinion.

One of three rivets in the same helmet.

Rivet number two of the same helmet. I cannot get a closup of the third rivet.
