If you are going to collect original WWI German steel helmets you might want to start with finding the book, "The History of the German Steel Helmet 1916-1945 by Ludwig Baer". I think Hans has also recommended this book to another Forum member interested in the WWI German steel helmet. An excerpt from this book in regards to your question, " The helmet will then be painted a field gray in color both inside and out and then the finish will be fired at a temperature of 120 degrees C". The book actually goes into much more detail.
Also, take the time to study some of the fine originals posted in this section.
Happy Hunting,

There is no way I can give you a until I see the helmet. If this is unfamiliar territory for you please obtain good pictures and post them on this thread, or send them to my email roelensc@yahoo.com.

Dogtag!
I looked at the photos you sent me. Be advised that is not a WWI German helmet it's a WWII M35
I saw a single luft decal. Does it have a three color shield on the other side? I suspect the decal is a fake. The helmet and paint looks good to me but I am no expert on WWII helmets. If no decal on the other side I'd say it's bad decals.
If there are two decals have it looked at in the Helmet forum. I think it's priced too low for a real double decal.
