speaking of masks!

while i was digging for the gummi masks for the other thread i pulled this out and thought you guys might like it. looks like a real combat vet! the mask is pretty standard leather with the smoke filter but what i always got a kick out of was the hand-sewn cover. i wonder if it wasnt done to keep it quiet! and some interesting perspective -- i bought this mask in 1972 for $9.00! john

Indeed a rare item. Your guess about making noise might be correct. Imagine that if you are in no-mans land, the last thing you want is the banging noise of you gasmaskcan that gives away your presence to the enemy. Nice catch, certainly at that price.
