Should an old M16 liner still smell of leather?

Got this in the mail. Had it looked at by a repo liner maker and he gave it the all clear from what he could see. But I smell leather and want to ask does this mean it's a aged fake?

Ninty year old tanned leather should smell like a pack of cigarettes.

I have very little experience with all original liners. I only have two in great shape in helmets I own and since I can't take them out I cannot compare. They do not smell like leather but then I can't get my nose close enough. If this one is bad I may have to eat it. All I can do is ask for a refund and leave bad feed back but seller sold as is. I suppose it's my fault but then again an item like this should come with an inspection period and if it's determined to be a fake the seller will take it back if he /she has any integrity. If not I only paid just over double what a repo would go for so not out too much. Anyway, I can't smell it from my location till I get it.

Old leather can still have the "leather smell" for many, many years. Last week, I pulled out of a closet at my mother's home a leather briefcase used by my father, untouched since 1959. It still had the smell. Not as old as 1916, but still a very long time.

Well yes and my liner does not reek of leather but put your nose right to it and I can smell it.

Guys can I get some opinions from those in the know? With no responce I might start to think this liner is good, slap it in my M16 and up the price on the e-stand! Then I won't be in the mood to see all the people telling me I am a criminal and a faker

Or I might list it on the E stand as a good liner just to see what happens cause well I NEED TO KNOW!
