I have seen those replacement buttons on many things myself. They were a popular expedient that kept one from having to locate a needle and thread. They were used by all armies and I have a few of them (unassembled) that came in a Doughboy's housewife.

The button is a non regulation replacement button which I've seen on a number of German WW1 items, and I think they were widely used for repair in the field. It's not sewn on, but rather stuck through the cloth with a smaller buttoned end holding it in place. I have a 1915 dated breadbag with a set of identical buttons.

Based on the pictures you show here it looks like a good 2nd model 2 compartment bag, but I would be interested in Chip's opinion of it. The reason that it looks different than mine is because mine is a reworked 1st model 3 compartment version which has had one of the sections removed. Mine also has the D-ring straps hand sewn on because the early bags did not have these. I noticed that on yours the section with the size number has a name tag sewn overtop of it. Are there any other markings?

Edit: Below is my other Segeltuchtasche, a 2nd model like yours but made from a reddish brown cloth.

Both of mine are the second pattern, one in a light canvas, similar to Zeltbahnstoff and the other is the more commonly seen, heavier material.

They second mentioned one compares favorably to this one and, of course, the mask and filter cartridge are good. My only question is about what is under the added name patch on the end of the bag. I can see what appears to be part of an ink stamp, but it doesn't look like a number. Perhaps you can get the owner to peek under the edges to get a better idea of what is there. You may be able to do that without disturbing the patch.

Could you help me with this can? IMO the straps dont look german but the can is typical for gm15.

The long strap looks like ones that are used on various items, the medical canteen (Labeflasche) shoulder strap comes to mind. The short piece is the normal one for gas mask cans.

Ok thank you. Nice to hear that. Is the can typical for gm15 masks? I dont have one of these in my collection.

That's right, it's the can for the GM17, but the "deep lid" variant. You were half right to begin with because it is actually a recycled Gummimaske canister with added latch. The lid had to be made deeper to allow the bulkier leather mask to fit.
