Here are my two Segeltuchtaschen. The one of the left is the lighter weight material and is one of the few I have seen that is dated. The other is the standard heavy canvas of the M16 version.

I have a question regarding Gummimaske carrier cans. Are the design differences due to an evolution in design, or simply a manufacturer's variation?
The can that came with my Segeltuchtasche (on the right in the picture without the strap) has a distinctly different interior compared to the Rahmenmaske can on the left.

The reason I believe the Segeltuchtasche can is earlier is that the instructions mention only the earlier "Maske" (right side in pic.), while the Rahmenmaske instructions makes a distinction between the Maske and Rahmenmaske and mentions the spring straps (Spiralbaender).

                  Hans,

Could you post close-ups of the two labels. I cannot clearly read the two and I think the differences you have discovered are important.

I think that the differences in the carrying cans are due to pattern changes/improvements. I cannot prove it, but it is not likely that the German military would allow such differences when they had in place a whole process for making sure that items of issue were standardized.

                    You mean something like this?
German M17 Lederschutzmaske with K.u.K. markings on the filter.

I enlarged the labels as much as I could. I don't have the camera at this time to take new pics.
The main difference between the two is in the different way the Gummimaske and later Rahmenmaske were worn. The earlier "Maske" straps are to be pulled back only as far as the rear of the top of the head and not the back of the head (bis auf den Haarwirbel ziehen; nicht bis auf den Hinterkopf) according to both labels, while the later label adds that the Rahmenmaske's bands should be pulled as far as possible to the rear/lower back of the head (moeglichst weit nach hinten-unten ziehen). This change was due to the added straps and stiffening of the the Rahmenmaske.

Aside from the later label incidentally mentioning Spiralbaender, the only other difference between the two instruction labels is that in the earlier one it mentions using your index finger to wipe away moisture from the lenses with the "Wischfalte" flap, while the later label suggests using your thumb, and adds that a light coating of soap will prevent the lenses from misting over.

Very nice stuff Drapeau . I'd be interested in seeing some more pics of the gasmask. Some day I'll get around to finding some nice Austrian helmets and equipment. My paternal Grandfather was a Zugsfuehrer in the Sturmkompanie of the 2. Tiroler Kaiserjaeger Regiment and later served in a Sturmbatallion. I have yet to find more information on his service career.

                              Hans,

Thanks for your efforts to enlarge the labels and your additional comments.

Both of my Segeltuchtaschen have the type of carrying can with the wire cage in the lid and both have the instructions mentioning the Rahmanmasken.

You rarely have the abtility to know if the gas mask is original to the bag, but I can say for certain that one of mine is, because the owner marked the bag, the mask and the carrying can.

I have seen examples of the M15 Tasche in the original configuration, that is, without the "D" rings on the back and having three sections. I have also seen an M15 Tasche that was converted to an M16 by adding the rings and taking one of the cloth dividers out.

Regarding Austrian gas equipment, you had better start looking! These have never been plentiful and now with worldwide competition, they are highly sought after and very expensive. I have two examples, but have always wanted to upgrade my "stepped can" version. No luck however. And I have been looking for years.

                                Thanks Hans,

I will post some mask pictures as soon as I got back home..
Regarding your wish to start collecting AU stuff, mhh.., I would suggest you to start as soon as you can, because there was an 400% increase on the prices during the last 10 years (Im talking about AU stuff)..
Nowadays it's very hard to find out genuine AU stuff, harder than SS stuff belive me...cloth AU stuff is almost impossible, they are very very rare.
Very interesting the story of your grandfather: have you got pictures of him as Sturmtrupp? If yes please contact me via PM.

                                Cheers
                                Tom
