    Gas Warfare

    I recently found a book from the 1920's in German written by a engineer who was involved in chemical warfare during WW1. Its a very interesting book packed with information.

    So I needed to make some photographs of a few German gas masks. Not the drivers gas mask, the wooden gas mask can and the French gas grenade.

      Outstanding items you have there I have seen very few wooden gas mask cans for sale over the years and have never personally examined one. I'm guessing that these items are just a small part of your gas mask collection?

      The book looks like an interesting read. I also am reading all the first hand information from period books that I can find.

        I have always been fascinated by WW1 gas masks and gas warfare. Here is my contribution, with 2 french masks, and some random items.

            Thanks for the compliment. I also have a german Lederschutzmask and a French early Tampon T, like the M2 in the picture above, exept that it only covers the nose and mouth.

            I didnt understand what you said about your wooden mask. I dont see any mask made of wood in the photos.

                Johan,

                You have a nice driver's "mask". Mine is nearly identical, except that it is missing the neck sling. Do you have the accompanying goggles and carrying case?

                I will have to dig out my Italian and Russian masks. I have two Zelinski types, similar, but different.

                  the goggles are high on my wanted list It would be great to see the Italian and Russian masks you have. I'm also intrigued by the subject.

                    Very nice display Jean-Loup. I unfortunately don't have my collection displayed, nor do I have anything other than WW1 German at this time. Shown here is most of my collection showing a Rahmenmaske, 2 of my Ledermasken (1917 dated on the left and 1918 on the right) and a selection of carriers.

                          Two Lederschutzmasken. The one on the left has a filter dated June 1917, the other is dated July 1918. The right mask has seen heavy use compared to the other, and is patched in 3 areas. Both filters are the 11-C-11 type.

                          The mask on the left has the clip-on filter attachment (schnappdeckel) introduced in 1917 which was intended to filter out diphenylchloroarsine, a non leathal irritant, that caused severe irritation to the nose and throat and made breathing with a gas mask on impossible. The diphenylchloroarsine "blue cross shells" was fired in combination with diphosgene "green cross", and was used in powder or dust form as apposed to gas or liquid.

                            I posted the gas mask shown below 2 months ago, but decided to show it here as a comparison to the Lederschutzmaske (GM 17).

                            This mask is, I think, the 3rd version of the early rubberized cloth masks or Gummimasken. This version was officially referred to as the Rahmenmaske and differed from the earlier models in that extra straps were added to the forehead area, a strip of cloth was attached to the interior perimeter of the mask, and the front plate to which the filter was screwed was reduced in diameter. According to some sources, this mask was introduced early in 1916, while others state it was August 1916. By this time the upgraded 11/11 or 11/11 S filter had long been in use.

                              This picture shows the fabric border around the inside perimeter of the mask and also the earlier straps used prior to the "spiralbaender" used on these masks around the beginning of 1917 as well as on the Lederschutzmaske GM 17.
