    Photo ID help

Do these soldier's uniforms mean anything special?
The gentleman in the front row, center is, I'm pretty positive, my Grandfather. Friedrich Gaumann from Daaden, near the River Sieg in the Westerwald.
I'm trying to piece together what unit he may have been in, and any other things.
    Thanks,
    Eric Gaumann

    The reverse of the postcard.

What's that date on the postmark?
I see it's addressed to a Gaumann in Daaden; can anyone decipher the man's first name and what follows the "Daaden" part of the address?
    Thanks,
    Eric Gaumann

I can only see part of the date, unfortunately. It's the 29th day of Something (I can't read the month's number, perhaps an 8?) 1917.

          Hello,

It's adressed to Ernst Guamann and the word would be a river or a city as there's b/ (bei) in front of the name.

It's Daaden bei Betzdorf. If you can enlarge the shoulder strap of the fellow in the background of the first photo (the one whose strap is facing the camera), I might be able to tell you what regiment they are in. The unit information is actually written in on the back, just above the handwritten "Feldpost". I can't see it clearly enough to decipher it. If I had to guess, I would say it says, "Feld Art.Rgt.251. That would match up with the dark (black) bands on their caps and it does look like the guy in the back has a flaming bomb over the unit number on his shoulder strap.

              Chip,

I tried enlarging the photo to see what I could make out. It looks to me like there's a letter on the shoulderstrap, not a bomb, but I could be totally out of it!!!!

                Thanks....

                for the help, guys.

I'll post a HQ close-up of the shoulderstrap shortly, and the Feldpost info, too.

Now that you mention it I was told my Grandfather *was* in the Field Artillery.
And, Betzdorf is close to Daaden (I think).
                Thanks,
                Eric Gaumann

                  shoulderstrap

I noticed this, too, but couldn't make head nor tails out of it.
                  Could it have been censored?

Take a good look at the second photo of the shoulder strap. It looks like something (has to be a bomb) over the number "23". Conveniently, the 23.FAR was stationed in Coblenz.
