    Württemberg Landjäger Korp

I finally obtained the cap to complete this ensemble a few years back, but it deserves as second posting now that I have new photos of all three with my beloved Fuji FinePix S602Z. The matching Waffenrock, Pickelhaube, and Schirmmütze for an NCO in Württemberg Landjäger Korp.

Here is the link to the Pickelhaube, from there you can link directly to the Waffenrock and Schirmmütze.

Liked it the first time and like it more now. Very nice grouping, super to display. However, I find few who even know what organization this represents, Tony. Perhaps a bit of background to set the group in perspective?
      Best, as always

I had one like this that I gave to a friend of mine about 15 years ago. I think mine would date to the period of the Franco-Prussian War due to the button size and shap...as well as some other characteristics. There were two differences in mine and this one. First, mine had a sort of carmine colored facings instead of blue and Two, mine had no design on the straps...which a recall were sewn down all the way around as well. Can anyone tell me what signifigance the differences in mine represented?

          Tony,

I had never heard of the Württemberg Landjäger Korp before. Did any of the other states have something similar?

          A very nice uniform.

            Tony,

A wonderful Württ Landjägereikorps outfit. I have a Württ LK Schirmmütze that is marked like yours. If I may answer Mike, yes the Landjägerie existed in other states, most notibly Prussia. These rural police forces evolved into the rural Gendarmerie during the time of the Weimar Republic and NS Zeit.

Thanks for showing your uniform again.

No-one? Drat. I was hoping someone else would jump in and save me the two-fingered typing! This is mostly pulled from: Löhken, Ingo (1988) Polizei-Uniformen der Süddeutschen Staaten 1872-1932.

In 1871 the kingdom of Württemberg with the capital of Stuttgart had about 1.8 million inhabitant which rose to 4 million by the end of the First World War. The police tasks were performed by the Ortspolizei (local police) and the Landjägerkorps. The Landjagerkorps was first created in 1807. It held other designations at the beginning, but since 1823 utlized the name of Landjägerkorps. The LK was organized into three districts (Stuttgart, Reutlingen, and Ellwangen). For each district there were only two officers plus the commander. The remaining men in the LK were NCOs with the rank of Sergeant to Vize-Feldwebel.

In 1872 the LK had 500 members, whose number increased until 1914 to approximately 600 Landjäger. The Landjägerkorps was distributed in 65 main and 348 branches with only one or two men in each station. The numbers were never very high, which explains why Landjägerkorps items are so scarce.

Unlike the Ortspolizei (local police), the Landjägerkorps not only perfromed rural policing duties, but also deployed to the field with the Army to serve as military police similar to the Preußen Gendarmerie. Photographs of the Landjagerkorps are quite scarce due to their small numbers, but most photos encountered are of them deployed in the field on maneuvers. To reflect this employment, the LK adopted the Feldgrau Feldrock on 19 May 1917.

To answer Mike’s question, every state which made up the Reich had their own Police forces of course, but I am not sure how many others also deployed to the field as did the Württemberg Landjagerkorps?
