    Securing Epaulettes

What do you call the piece that is securing the Epaulette to the shoulder? Is that material available?

      Hi Willi,

not sure there is a correct term for these. I usually refer to it as a loop or slider. In any case these can be found but are not readily available - you will need to be lucky and/or patient and pay attention that you get these in the right country colour to match your tunic and to match these with the correct epauletten (active, a.D. or z.D.) i.e. there are loops for Prussia/Bavaria/Wuerttemberg/Saxony/Hessen/Mecklenburg and these come in active, a.D and z.D. versions (as do the Epauletten).

      Cheers, Tom

Thanks Tom. I need it for a Prussian officer. I spoke to a German dealer at Kassel, and he said tough to find but he didn't bring any with him. "Any" referring to a nice 12" inch piece.

              Hi Willi,

              these loops are called "Passanten".

And yes, hard to find a matching pair in the correct size.

What's that green tunic ? Gardejäger ? The green epaulets will not match this tunic...
...you need complete red ones (top and bottom)

              Regards

              Torsten

                Hi Torsten,

Thanks for commenting. The Epauletten came with this Garde Schützen tunic. I was told this is an earlier tunic (1890 or earlier). So, they should have red cloth centers, like Garde Jäger officers?

Passanten is indeed correct in German but not in English.

I was a little bit puzzled when I saw that tunic with those Epauletten. The latter should indeed be red (which is the most easy colour to find).

In any case congrats on having that beautiful tunic which is rare and hard to find!

                      Thanks Tom.

                      So a pair of Epauletten like these would work;

                      https://www.weitze.com/militaria/79/...n__258379.html

I do have some concerns with this pair. Pips seem poorly applied, and with the hole in the center, it could either be a promotion or a removed cypher.

I will also look for the correct pair of Schulterstücke, as the tunic is set up for those.

So, what are the black Epauletten for? Landwehr? Pionier?

Hi Willi, yes those will work but I would also wait for a better condition pair and perhaps a field grade officer. I love all the awards loops on your tunic. Too bad there is not a tailor's label with a name. Great tunic.

Yes those will work - but just look for these on ebay.de to save yourself some money.

IMO tunic will look way better with Epauletten on it, instead of shoulder boards and I agree with Mike - try to find a pair for a major.

                          Pioniers also have red Epauletten.

Thanks Mike and Tom! I will keep my eyes open for a field grade set of Epauletten.

Yes, too bad it is not named or with a tailor label. There is a set of loops on the right side as well. Other than the top bar I guess it will be quite the challenge to fill all the loops.

You may get a pair from Saxonia militaria. I've heard them referred to as "bridles".
