        Hi, Stijn,

Since you'll probably be getting yours first, how about a review?

I didn't save my email and then I couldn't find it on his site... not under Reference Books or anyplace else I looked, woe, misery, etc.

Dietmar Raksch has produced an EXCELLENT book, in what is promised as the first of MANY volumes, each to cover additional German States.

It is a huge, heavy, well produced volume. with great B&W illustrations of the documents, each of which is accompanied by a dual same page German and English text which points out:

variations from one to another of the "same" award, short but illuminating career information on recipients-- vital to understanding some of the "weird" combinations of awards, as well as of the Kings, Generals, and officials signing these documents, and informative commentary on numbers of awards of the type shown. There is some astonishing information here, folks! It is logically arranged, by descending classes of the Orders in chronological order, making the changes over time quite clear. Suggested prices are listed in the backs, keyed to each page, though every award document was, of course, literally unique--unlike the awards themselves!

There are occasional random glitches in the English version, not of translation per se (though I think we all wish German rank titles were just left in the original), but of what may be some mechanical publishing glitch inserting "random" lines of text-- as when the Director of the Hamburg-America Line is refered to as a divisional commander. The German text seems always correct, and standing side by side with the English, such discrepancies are straightforward and obvious.

This mammoth book is a bargain at the price, and will delight everyone from those of you interested in the Napoleonic Wars to the wars of the 1860s and 1870/71, to World War One, and into the dying days of semi-independence at the beginning of the Third Reich. It will provide many hours of happy reading, no matter what era interests you. Wonder why Kaiser Wilhelm I did NOT sign that particular document in 1878? The clear, crisp text tells you why. Or what the heck all that mishmash was in 1888-- clearly presented. Every document can tell a story-- and the concise yet data-packed text in this book brings those stories, and all the history behind them, out.

I note with personal interest the appearance of four documents from Johannes Karpf, captain of SMS Hohenzollern-- whose Italian Order of the Crown of Italy-Grand Officer award document I have (and the only other document of his I ever saw, Hamburg Hanseatic Cross, sold in manion's years ago). There was no example of the ultra rare "black-white" NON-combatant Iron Cross 2nd Class-- you've seen one in this from my collection, and I note that rare as hen's teeth though they may be, the 1926 version of Prussian Lifesaving Medal on the Ribbon document illustrated was much different from my 1928 one, also shown on this Forum: annual variants??!!

I hope, with the well-deserved internet publicity that this volume will get, and the approachability of publisher Detlev Niemann, that collectors of German Imperial award documents, wherever on the world they may be, can gather in cooperation for the eagerly anticipated future volumes.

Which state will be next, I wonder?

PS, Would it be possible to provide a direct link to order this book so that non-registered people could order this book from Detlev Niemann without going through the password/registration process?
