    1914 Eisenbahn Tochterhort Medals

    From the net...

The Töchterhort railway was a non-profit foundation of the state railway, which was founded on May 25, 1908, at the instigation of the Minister Breitenbach and other ministries. The purpose of the foundation was to support the unmarried daughters of deceased railroaders and officials of the railway directorate. The relief funds of the railway should be relieved and financial help should be provided to emergency railway workers. Particular attention was paid to sick and weak children and orphans. These should get a good education and training and accommodation.

In February 1908, the Empress and Queen Auguste Victoria took over the protectorate, the honorary presidency. The foundation has financed itself through fundraising at the railway and other professional associations. In spring 1909 the newly built "Christianenheim" was put into operation in Erfurt. (named after the wife of Minister Breitenbach) The ceremonial opening took place on 19 April 1910 with the participation of the Minister and other dignitaries. The home had room for 239 orphans. The home was used to accommodate orphaned and disabled orphans.

Due to the high demand, the home was expanded in the spring of 1914. During this time probably the foundation of the "Paul von Breitenbach Medal" falls. There is this medal as a non-portable medal, with backletters and carrying eye. The medals with brooches are often referred to as 1st class. The medals were awarded in a cardboard box with the picture of the "Christianenheim" on the lid.

In 1920, the individual state railways were united to form the German Reichsbahn. The railway daughters house was, with the 1922 founded boys house, renamed the Reichsbahn Orphanage.

        The text:

"Grosses erleben macht ehrfürchtig und im Herzen fest" - Kaiser Wilhelm II., 1916

I will try to translate the text:

"Great experienceing makes respectful and firm in the heart " - Imperor Wilhelm II., 1916
