    Bayerischer landesverein vom roten kreuz

I am not much ww1 collector but this medal is on just recently purchased ww2 medal bar.

Can I get an advise here what was the criteria to obtain it and if is known how many of these was issued at all?

I tried internet but not much information there or I was not able to properly search.

    Thank you !

I think it is just a service commemorative medal with no real requirements other than having served in the state association of the Red Cross. I rather doubt there would be any surviving records of the number of them that were given out.

I would guess that one is Weimar Republic.

it is quite an expensive award so it must have it reason.

Even commemorative medals that are enameled bring a premium price. I think you will need a specialist in this area to give you a more definitive answer. I agree that it is a postwar medal.

Interesting, I hope some expert in this field will notice this thread. I focus on ww2 medal bars so this medal is for me the first time I saw it and naturally with a medal bar I had to purchase no matter I lack knowledge. :/

Its the Ehrenzeichen des Bayerischen Landesvereins vom Roten Kreuz 2. Klasse [Decoration of the Bavarian State Association of the Red Cross, 2nd Class]. (The 1st Class was a pinback award.)

This decoration was instituted in 1923.

Sorry, I have no details on its statutes or award numbers. However, from the designation and the two classes, it is safe to assume that it was surely an award for merit rather than mere service. (Also, an award for long service in two classes - 20 and 40 years - was instituted the same year.)

                  Hi Yubari,

"it is quite an expensive award so it must have it reason"

Please see here for a real price for an sold example: https://www.kuenker.de/de/archiv/stueck/137813

You can buy the first class cross for 138 Euro on ebay.de, shipping included; it is unsold since April 2019.

                  Hi HPL2008,

"... an award for long service in two classes - 20 and 40 years - was instituted the same year."

We must differentiate between state awards (staatliche Auszeichnungen) and nonstate awards (nichtstaatliche Auszeichnungen)

The awards for long service are state awards (Freistaat Bayern), you can find them e.g. in the Nimmergut-Katalog (OEK No. 542 - 551).
The awards for merit as shown here are nonstate awards (Bayerischer Landesverein vom Roten Kreuz), not listed in the OEK.
                  (Entschuldige bitte die Klugsch...)

                  Uwe

                    Kein Problem.

Both are listed in the Ordensmuseum's publication on German Red Cross awards by Manfred Schemeit, which is where I got the institution dates from.

I'm just not quite sure how the distinction between awards issued by the state and by the organisation (of which I am aware and which, of course, stll exists today*) is of relevance here.
The point I was making was merely that (apart from the other factors) it hardly seemed plausible that two different crosses instituted the same year would both be for long service (and the above confirms my assumption).

*) It may be a bit of self-promotion, but perhaps this little excursion is of interest to Yubari for the historical lineage. I did a little thread on FRG-era decorations of the Bavarian Red Cross (Uwe knows these of course):

(Omly the decoration in post # 6 - 9 is an official state award, the others are non-state awards by the organisation itself.)
