Ralph, I have doubts about your original. The details, especially the lettering on the reverse don't match mine. This, however, could be due to different or worn dies. http://www.mypage.ewol.com/wildman/E...en-Obverse.jpg

      Still not convinced.

But I'm not saying you're wrong - otherwise I would not have bothered posting. Obviously there is some doubt in my mind. I agree on the probability that the pin has been repaired or replaced - but if so, it replaced one much like it, as there never seems to have been one centrally placed.

Hard to say, gents. That obverse is darn good - could be OK, in spite of the "squished" maker's marks. Anyone else have one of these, or care to comment?

Thank you for the comments so far.

Ralph, you need to do a side by side of the one Christian shows, they are entirely different on the obverse also...

          I did.

It may be my rapidly ageing eyes, but I see similarities and differences amongst them all. I can't make ANY of them match up with one another.

Maybe there is only ONE original, and 7999 reproductions?

And would that REALLY surprise you? I think one die, one type. Just how many vets needed this badge? How many vets qualified to wear this badge? Not enough for more than a single die, I think.

I had never seen nor heard of this piece before but last night I was looking through some Dealers catalog (from Arizona?) last night and this was in there...

if i'm correct, there are 8.000 awardees - it was written in an article about this award (perhaps i'll find it in time to post the source)

                  Yes. 8000 awarded.

And all were "private purchase" pieces, according to what I read in Niemann's catalog. These things are tougher than Golden Party badges. I've handled several, seen pictures of many more... and NONE of them look exactly alike!!!

                  Why the variety?

"Private purchase" means all types and varieties acceptable If private purchase why numbered? I think because there was to be a 'control'.

Not in this case. As far as i know, only one manufacturer (the one, Christian mentioned) was allowed to make these badges. The number isnĀ“t a serial number, its a license number.

With that said, i have my doubts about both of Ralphs badges.

                      best,
                      Gerd

                        Still just "doubts".

I don't think Brian referred to the number as a serial, but a "control number"... which isn't much "control", at all if you think about it. "Liscense number" sounds better. it would have been Karl Moebius' number then?

But nothing definite beyond doubts? Does the piece in question match any known fakes? Why bother with a replacement pin on a fake...

Yes Ralph I'm not sure of the vernacular for these numbers. See them on some manufacturers of sport awards if I remember correctly and no I don't mean the serialed sports badges. Hey Ralph you've scored a load of good stuff, I just think the two Elephanten are not in the same league.

                            The marking

It's a Numerical Patent Code. 'Ges. Gesch.' means "legally protected" in case anyone was wondering. Usually means that the manufacturer was the sole producer. Just trying to clear up any confusion.

                            Carry on!
