I don't think so, look at the submarine, it's different. But I agree, that's no easy to see.

In this case, can we call it an original one? The badge is officially created in early 1918, so wartime badges should be rare.

Qualification for the badge were 3 rides against the enemy (patrols at the home coast were not included), later also 2 rides if their total duration was 150 days on the sea. Quantity of awarded pieces is estimated at 4500-5000 (so not very rare).

This one we should call private purchased replacement IMO

mmmmm....these hollow back badges surface (pun intended) fairly often. I would shop around to see the median price and then negotiate a price for this one.

The same can be said for the Schott badges.

I don't see any other for sale right now either, however for about 1.5x that amount you can have a period, Schott badge!

Nothing strange. Many other replacements of 1920's-30's are exepnsiver as awarded period originals, i.e. Iron Crosses 1st class or wound badges with screwback, additional hooks or other unusual mounting. Or just made by more demanded manufacturers.

A hollow U-Boot badge is for sure scarcer as the solid one. If somebody is collecting variants, is often ready to pay more for the piece missing in his collection

No worry, I didn't pay 395€ for this one (I finally bought it). I got it for half, so I'm probably a lucky guy then
