Not my collecting field but a good trade piece! I was able to buy the cross last week on a local auction and I must say its a really nice piece of history.
A fine example of a rare Grand Cross of the Iron Cross 1914, complete with the original long original collar section on a double-wound loop for suspension; the obverse with a raised central “W” with the e-institution date “1914” in raised numbering on the lower arm and a raised Prussian crown on the lower arm; the reverse with a central oak leaf stem consisting of three oak leaves, with the original institution date “1813” in raised numbering on the lower arm, and a raised Prussian crown on the upper arm, with “FW” in raised lettering directly below. A beautiful original second piece (zweitstück) or made for jeweler’s / museum displays. The black paint on this example is extremely well preserved.
There were five recipients of the 1914 Grand Cross in the First World War:
• Kaiser Wilhelm II (wore honorary apiece)
• Paul von Hindenburg (9 December 1916)
• Erich Ludendorff (24 March 1918)
• Prince Leopold of Bavaria (4 March 1918)
• August von Mackensen (9 January 1917)
