    WWI German Research

    Hi,

    I've got some German dog tags from WWI I'd like to get researched, but I don't know where to go besides the casualty books. I think one of the tags is to a KIA.

    Can anyone lead me in the right direction on how to go further? I've spent hours looking for answers but have gone nowhere.

      Thanks for the link. I have gotten to that pint already though. I have one veteran I know is in fact on there, but don't know how to research from there.

        Do you at least know how to translate these? I know my guy is on there because it's the same birth date but it says "(cross) in ????" And I'm not sure what that means.

        And how could he have been a casualty in December 1918? Delayed in book?

          He ist lited in that way " + in Gef.(angenschaft)" - died in captivity (as POW).

          So it was normal that in December 1918 Germans were still POWs.

            You guy is also listed in the Volksbund list. So you know where he is buried in France. The cemetery Troyon should bei not too far away from the POW camp in which he died.

              Der deutsche Soldatenfriedhof Troyon wurde von den französischen Militärbehörden nach dem Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges als Sammelfriedhof angelegt. Hier fanden Gefallene und in Lazaretten Verstorbene aus dem Gebiet zwischen Combres und St. Mihiel, sowie der Maashöhen, ihre letzte Ruhestätte.

                So would he have died or been captured on September 28, 1918?

                And would he probably have died of wounds or died of disease in captivity?

                  He could have been captured some days or weeks before September 28, 1918 because the date Sept 28 was transmitted later from the French Red Cross to the German Army HQ or Red Cross as date of his death. So he ist listed in the German "Verlustliste" (list of KIA or WIA German soldiers).

                  We do not know the intensity of his wounds and how long he was POW.

                    Ah ok. So do we know if this was a result of combat wounds or disease?

                      Sorry, no we do not. We only know the result: finally he was dead.
