Imperial Cavalry Officer Sword help date please.

Recently acquired this minty Officers sword which I believe is Cavalry with the crossed swords on the hilt. Blade is 1" by 32" and unmarked. I assume this is German but could it be Austrian? It has a Maltese cross on the hilt and Crown in the etching. I would assume this to be WW1 or earlier. BTW I know the sword knot is later.

It has moved on to a new home. If I collected these, it would have been a Keeper.
