    Questions on an Austrian Medal

    Hi
Would appreciate views on this medal.Looks like a gold grade but I cannot find reference to a 30mm gold so am i correct it assuming it is a copy?
Wear on rear looks like rubbing from wear.
Shown in comparison with a bronze grade similar type medal
    thank you

    Hello,

I see that the medal with the portrait of emperor Karl I shows the engraver's signatuure "KAUTSCH".

From what I see, it isn't a fake, unless made in some strange metal, like tin, etc. but the piece looks struck and not cast.

Simply, it's a Bronzene Tapferkeitsmedaille that (impossible to say when) was gilt.

The Austrian gold medal for military valour was in one grade only, as large as the silver Medal 1st Class.

For comparison, a series of Tapferkeitsmedaillen of the "Karl I" type; with two gold ones (one in real gold and one also officially awarded, but in gilt bronze) A Silver 1st Class, then the silver 2nd Class and the Bronze one.

The "K" mounted to the ribbon (used on Gold and Silver 1st Class medals only) inicates an award to officers.

    Best wishes,

    E.L.
