1870 EK1 for review.

A collecting friend is considering this cross and I have some real reservations about it. He realizes it is not an issue piece but is hoping that it a piece from WW1 time frame. I realize these photos are not great but has anyone found a replacement cross from the WW1 era that matches this? The W seems way off for any 1870 that I know.

I'm afraid I do not have good news for you friend. This one is a known fake.
Sometimes refered to as the "bad crown fake". It's main tell is the way the
sweatband of the crown is off center to the right of the rest of the crown. It's
not too noticeable in your pictures but if you do a search for "bad crown fake"
you will see many examples. Plus you are correct in that the "W" as well as
the date font do match original 1870 examples.

Actually Greg, that is great news. He has not spent anything yet so it is the perfect time to hear this. I am not familiar with every variant but did not like this one.
