Given the 2 overseas stripes on his sleeve-I'd say post war.

Sorry, I'm confused here. I suppose this was originally a German who fought for Germany in 1870/71 and got the EK2? Then he emigrated to the US, fought later alongside the French in WW1 and got the Croix de Guerre? Correct?
In any case, an absolutely fabulous photo!

        Regards
        Chris

Problem I see with an EK2 1870 is his age! This guy would have to be around 70+ at least, if the photo was taken post-WW1. He doesn't look that old.

While I think this could be a 1870 EK, I am more apt to believe that it is a 1914 EK that he "liberated" while serving overseas 1917-1918.

My opinion for what its worth is with Brian. I think the guy liberated the EK and is wearing it for the photo. If not that would be a great story.

I know of a case where an German officer, ek 1/ek2 winner in WWI ended up in the British services in WW2. He wrote a book about it. Name was Sulzbach or something.

Thanks for the input ,I would put him at about 50 with his wrinkly hands and wrinkles under his eyes .His expression is not of someone having fun ,its a really sad expression.Still whatever the reason its a cool photo .Rob.

Why is he wearing these medals on THAT side? For example British next of kin have the right to wear the medals of their loved ones on the right-hand side....could it have anything to do with that?
