looks like a form of Drucker schwärze ..
a common appearance for many crosses

Was this paint applied by some crooked dealers to simulate age?

its a regular thing to see on ek's

                  according to my research,
in imperial day's a common technique to patina silver..

how so many ek's became threated like that is unknown to me ,,,

those i researched showed the treatment was often very old..
and did also became reactive in chemical reaction with the real copper oxide developing over the years ..

all I know ,,i suspect it to be a period treatment ...

                  don't worry

                  regards kay

Just came across this thread. I heard a hearsay story at a military history group years ago that soldiers who did night sentry duty or were part of night raiding parties would use a mixture of boot polish and pen ink to reduce glare from medals and buttons, etc. Do you know if there is any truth in this?
