    freherr von manteuffel dragoner tunic

I have had this tunic for about 20 years. Pretty cool to have what I believe is the matching militarpak and cover for it. It has these gold coloured No.4 buttons on the shoulder straps, could someone please tell me what these signify. The militarpak seems to start at around 1900 and the guy seems to of survived right through the war but can not see any references to the no.4.

In cavalry terms the numbered button signifies which squadron a person belonged to... so, 4th squadron of the 5th regiment.

Kaiserbunker lists your tunic as cornflower blue in color, with silver buttons... someone with more dunkelblau knowledge will need to comment on the discrepancies.

Open link and scroll until you see Dragoner Rgt 5, v. Manteuffel.

Thanks, the buttons although, very tarnished would be a silver colour. Thanks for the info. Some more info would be great. Even a picture of the same shoulder straps would be nice.

This tunic appears to be a normal infantry tunic. It's the wrong color for dragoons and it has Brandenburg cuffs (dragoons had Swedish cuffs). From the looks of it, you have a Bavarian infantry tunic. Better photos could confirm.

P.S. I doubt any Freiherr would be a sergeant!

          Thanks

I will post pictures of any part of the tunic you want, do you think the shoulder straps have been added. I collect general ww1 pre ww1 stuff so do not know a lot about pre ww1 tunics. Thanks for you input

            thanks

So 20 years ago I bought this tunic from a nz dealer, before the internet, one of the first things I bought. There was as you could imagine only one militaria dealers in new Zealand. Pretty straight up sort of guy. A few months later I bought the paybook, with quite a few others and later on again a pretty good collection of shoulder straps. Its only recently I made the connection, was pretty upset I was wrong, but still pretty awesome. He never claimed they were connected

              kilkerkm8,

I'm sorry if you got the impression that I was trying to put your tunic down. That was not my intention at all. So many things that we militaria collectors possess have stories that go along with them. Sometimes they are true stories and sometimes they are just stories.

My intention was to inform you as to what you likely have. I suspect that anyone that posts their items here is wanting to know more about them. Occasionally, when they get that information, it not what they had expected or what they wanted to hear.

Though you may be disappointed, you now have a better idea of what it is you have. I may be able to tell you more if you would show the inside of the tunic, any markings that are there and one of the collar rank disks.

If you would like any help identifying your shoulder straps, I could assist there too.

              Regards,
              Chip
