I have some.From the German records I have it attached to the 5th Division (3rd District-Brandenburg). But when I go to the British records it shows the MGSs Abt 5 as being attached!! This is quite common with specialist units. The 5th was a very good Division, I have a lot of info if your interested.The fact that the Tag is broken is a bad sign. They would quite often break it in two putting half in the dead soldier,s mouth for ID later to be buried.

Wow, thanks for that! I am very interested in any information about this man. I can't find him on volksbund.de, although it's world war one records are quite sparce. None of my family's two Deutsche Soldaten killed in WW1 are listed on the site, although the local town memorial has their names and dates of death. As I say, if I can get a group picture of 13 Abt, that would be great as I would add the erkennungsmarke and a MG badge and have them framed for a nice display so that - albeit in a small way - Richard Sonnenschein is remembered.

I have some info.on the mini badge. It,s a Officers cap badge.Probability it was worn at the training school at Rozoy-sur-Serre or Tongeren (occupied Belgium). Only NCO,s and enlisted men were allowed to wear the left sleeve insignia untill late 17 when the rule was changed to include Officers.
This tally,s with my info on the purchase it was on an old cloth covered wall hanging card with 20 other cap badges all from different arms and nations.
It was brought back by a US Officer who was present at the Treaty of Versailles in june 1919.
I guess boys will be boys and he wanted some momentos!

Hi guys,
just aquired these two from Belgium e-bay and wonder if they could be good.

I've been trough all these pages, but didn't found something quite similar(I think!!)

I also don't expect to much, but hey, who knows and IF it turns out bad then it will be a good reference for others

I didn't pay very much, so no big deal if it's no good, and will keep them anyway.
