    What medal is this?

    Hello,

My Great Opa (Urgroßvater) served in the Kaiserliche Marine in WWI and in the Kriegsmarine (admin) in WWII.

I have tried for years to figure out what medal he is wearing on his WWI dress jacket. He earned the Iron Cross 2nd class, but the medal on the right is a bit of enigma. Can anyone help out?

        Anhalt?

Tough to see but the medal on the right might be Freidrich Cross from Anhalt.

The green center fades on these ribbons and looks similar.

Possibly a Brunswick MVK on the noncombat ribbon?

Thanks for providing the name. I looked it up in the Naval Ranklist. The medal is for the Oldenburg F-A Cross, 2nd Class.

                  Kind regards

Thanks for the info Pierce. Would that be on the non-combatant ribbon? Or is it the blue with red stripes (for combatant?) where the camera is making not bringing in the color correctly?

                      Fragen

I have two questions: can you tell what is written on the band of his WW 1 capband and do you know exactly from where he came?

The book does not distinguish this but I would assume the combatant one.

I'm not entirely sure what the cap tally says "...halbfloatilla.... " is all I can make out. I believe he was born in Wilelmshaven and then at some point moved to Bremerhaven where he raised is family.

His rank in the WWI era photo is "Obermaschinistenmaat", which was a junior NCO rank. The insignia was silver colored for the engineer branch.

The only word on the cap band that I can read is "HALBFLOTTILLE".
