1870 Grand Cross stickpin? button?

Hey folks,

I picked this up with some other goodies and curious if I am correct that this is a period piece? Too bad I didnt get its bigger brother.

Its not a stickpin and not really a tinnie but has the look and same type of feel.

Thoughts?

I would say a veteran's piece from the late 19th century.

I like it. It is an interesting piece of patriotica.
It's not a miniature of any actual award.

The inventor of this piece was apparently not aware of the interpretation of swords pointing downwards i.e. defeat!
