    Undated S98/05?

    Hi all,

I recently acquired this 98/05 along with a Gew 98 (almost all matching, front band is a repro )

I am having trouble deciding if it is a fake, an export bayonet or real. It is only marked with the maker, weyersberg kirschbaum & cie solingen, and nothing more. No dates on the spine and no acceptance marks that I can see.

It also wont fit ANY of my Gew 98's as the grip and bayonet lug slot seem too narrow. Was I fleeced?

ps. believe or not 3 or 4 weeks ago at NYC flea market I was trying to buy a modern but pretty well made kind of desk gadget / paper weight - half size metal skull , when was asking these two Chinese guys "how much and why so expensive " , I discovered three bayonets on their stand ... nothing spectacular - Swedish Mauser M1896 (!) , Berthier M 1892 and Yugo or Czech Mauser (!) - When I took closer look what a surprise !! All three were fakes !!! - yes , I know it's hard to believe ... When I asked them " Did you start to fake even such common items now ??? " they got offended ...

There are a couple of give-aways with this bayonet. First, an Imperial S98/05 should be finished bright throughout and it looks artificially aged in the photographs. Second, the grip bolts should not be slotted as this was a post 1927 modification. Third, it should fit on a Mauser M98 rifle.
